Despite some less than stellar 2014 export numbers, Spain continued to lead the way in the global orange trade. In 2014, Spain exported 1,634 thousand tonnes of oranges totaling 1,256 million USD, 14% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany, where it supplied 24% of its total orange exports in value terms, accounting for 76% of Germany’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Spain was a net exporter of oranges. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced, except for from 2008-2011 when high export prices made it less notable.
South Africa and the U.S. were among the other main global suppliers of oranges in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Egypt (+24% per year) and China (+19% per year).
Spain’s top 5 trading partners in 2014 were Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy, with a combined 70% share of Spain’s orange exports. The share of Italy increased slightly (+3 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated minor negative dynamics (-2 percentage points).
