In spite of some rocky export numbers in 2014, China continued its dominance in the global canned mushroom trade. In 2014, China exported 271 thousand tonnes of canned mushrooms totaling 608 million USD, 9% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Viet Nam, where it supplied 15% of its total canned mushroom exports in value terms.
From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of canned mushrooms. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced, except for in 2007, 2013 and 2014 when low import prices made it less notable.
The Netherlands and Spain were among the other main global suppliers of canned mushrooms in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were India (+23% per year) and Poland (+15% per year). Poland, by virtue of this sustained growth, strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In addition to Viet Nam, China’s other top 4 trading partners were Japan, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Korea and Malaysia, with a combined 54% share of China’s canned mushroom exports. The share of Viet Nam increased significantly (+14 percentage points), while the share of Malaysia fell back slightly (-2 percentage points).
