How outpatient programs can help recover from addiction without leaving a person’s life behind

People fighting addiction can sometimes find it very hard to withdraw from their addictive behavior and dependence on whatever substance they are abusing.
There are a number of ways substance abuse patients and their family and friends choose to address their problems and pursue a treatment.

Many patients are recommended to enter inpatient programs and to be admitted to a closed rehab facility. However, for many patients this method of treatment can only prove counterproductive in terms of their emotional and social life.

One of the greatest problems about inpatient rehabilitation programs is that they cut off the patient from their normal life. A great factor in the rehabilitation process itself is normalizing the lives of the patients struggling with substance abuse, without the dependency. The only way to help the situation is to allow the patients the freedom to carry on with their lives, while undergoing the medical treatment for the addiction.

Some patients can actually get depressed in inpatient treatments for getting shut out of their lives, which can prove even worse for their condition. Assigning someone to an outpatient rehabilitation program can actually motivate them, by trusting them with enough freedom to fight their addiction. Outpatient programs offer people the comfort and peace of their homes and family, without interrupting their work life. Being busy is a great distraction for patients fighting addiction, and nothing works like work for the purpose. Only outpatient programs can offer such opportunity.

Despite the advantages, outpatient programs are not without their due challenges. People fighting addiction can sometimes find it very hard to withdraw from their addictive behavior and dependence on whatever substance they are abusing. People undergoing outpatient rehabilitation often drop out of the treatment due to the lack of enough will power and the absence of adequate emotional support.

This is why sessions with private therapists are just so important for the success of rehabilitation for drug addicts, but especially during outpatient rehabilitation. Without adequate emotional and psychological support, not everyone would be able to get through the outpatient program without losing control. Around one fifth of people undergoing outpatient treatment can drop out, as per a study by National Center for Biotechnology Information. Furthermore, 70% drop out right after the first and second visits, which is especially true for people lacking enough moral support to go on with giving up the object of dependence.

Outpatient programs can only offer the best of both the worlds to people fighting addiction if they religiously attend the sessions with private therapists, take the prescribed medicine and follow the recommended regimen.
