In this program, the patient has the freedom of movement to and from the doctor’s appointments by visiting the physician from their homes on a daily basis excluding weekends. A lot of people prefer this kind of treatment due to its anonymity, ease of access, lower costs and less disruptions to the day to day activities or functioning of the individual. To enhance effectiveness in treating drug addiction, the outpatient treatment program employs the following tactics:
Pharmacological treatment: this is the use of medication to help ease the physical reactions as a result of withdrawal. The physician prescribes medicine to help ease pain and other complications.
Individual therapy: personal counseling is given to individuals to help them change their behavior and attitude. It is essential in addressing the needs of a specific individual.
Mental health treatment: drug abuse and addiction is often accompanied by other mental and physical illnesses such as mental disorders. The outpatient treatment program is equipped to diagnose such illnesses and offer medication to treat such disorders.
Relapse prevention: outpatient programs equip the individual patients with necessary skills that may help them avoid recurrence of drug misuse practices. They encourage individuals to remain sober and observe abstinence.
Offer significant life skills: individuals undergoing rehabilitation at an outpatient program attend special classes and lessons that equip them with necessary skills to cope with stressful circumstances and situations that may lure them into drug use. These skills may also help save lives.
Re-socialization skills: individuals are taught how to positively adapt to the drug free society. They are taught how to make and maintain new friendships. They are also taught how to communicate effectively with other members of the society. Re-socialization skills basically helps individuals have a smooth reintroduction into the society.
Group therapy: behavioral treatment may be offered to a group of patients all who are undergoing treatment for drug addiction. These groups may be contemporary or specific to address specific needs such as women groups to address the special needs of women addicts. The group may help create mutual relations that would lead to problem sharing and accelerate recovery.
As seen, outpatient programs are effective in achieving full recovery. However, in cases of extreme addictions inpatient program or referral to sober living houses is always recommended.
