Why a Multi-Stage Recovery Program is the Best

Make the decision and charge recovery.
When a person is looking for an addiction recovery program, be it for themselves or for a loved one or friend, the main criteria under consideration should be the quality of the program, the comfort level of the patient with the program, the skills, and educational background of the staff and medical professionals.

For a recovering addict, there is often the anxiety that the time spent in recovery is going to be wasted on a program that won’t work, sending the addict further into the spiral of addiction, and requiring repeat trips to a program in order to finally, maybe, secure sobriety.  This fear is founded in some reality.  There are many less professional, less designed and less deliberate programs that lead a recovery patient part of the way toward sobriety, but do not follow through with the later stages of recovery, or do not provide enough emphasis on self-management, or don’t delve properly into the motivations of addictive behavior.  These programs do everyone in the addiction and recovery community a disservice, because they increase the anxiety and fear around what can be a very exciting journey.

The modern, professional and well-designed substance abuse addiction recovery program will have multiple phases inside the same program.  This is design with intention, as the stability of relationships and focus the patient achieves as they move through their journey to sobriety can pay geometric dividends, but the reality is that different stages of addiction require different levels of care, independence and autonomy, accountability management, psychological buffering and re-socialization.  In fact, the behaviors and motivations that can lead to addiction behavior can also be part of the premier substance abuse recovery program.  Education and support which can help prevent addiction are in the purview of the facility, as is intervention methodology and support.

The beginning of a recovery program is in the hands of medical, therapeutic and recovery professionals with great training and experience.  They assess the addict and determine if the medical and psychological well-being of the patient is sufficient for the stresses of recovery.  The patient, at the same time, should become comfortable in the facility’s care, even though the situation itself can be quite uncomfortable and even frightening.

During treatment, there are multiple facets of attention from the recovery team.  There is focus on individual therapy, building behaviors and skills that will help the patient in the outside world, and working inside of group therapy and cooperative living to develop stronger social skills which can help buffer addiction.  The value of human relationships is nearly limitless in the recovery process.

Before the patient graduates from the primary treatment, the superior recovery and treatment program will plan out the patient’s return to their life.  There will be a number of considerations the patient has to make, including friends they formerly enjoyed their drug of choice with.  The facility should offer recovery prevention services, group options for alums of the program, and a continuing supporting environment that gives the patient the strongest chance of success.
