Detox first, then rehab, that is the rule
The most commonly asked question of drug detox facilities is “What is the length of drug detox?” Sadly the answer is often followed with “I don’t have time.”
Drug abuse, especially from prescription drugs, affects the lives of millions in America. In fact, someone dies every 14 minutes from prescription drug overdose and that does not count the lives that are ended from illicit drug use

Detox is not Rehab

Depending on the type of drug abuse, on average a stay in drug detox will take about a week to ten days. Compared to the likely outcome of not getting help, a week in drug detox is a small amount of time to spend if it can change the life of the person.

Most people confuse drug detox with drug rehab which usually lasts from 28 days to 6 weeks or longer. A drug rehab program begins once the individual has stopped taking drugs and is past the physical withdrawal process.

Drug detox, on the other hand is the process of removing the drugs and the toxins from the body. Detox cleanses the system and gets the person ready for the next step: learning to live without drug abuse.

What to Expect from Drug Detox

Nearly everyone going through drug detox experiences some type of withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms differ depending on the type of drugs used but generally include:

 • Constipation/diarrhea
 • Flu-like symptoms
 • Muscle aches
 • Insomnia
 • Anxiety/depression
 • Mood swings

The method of drug detox used throughout the process will have a significant impact on how comfortable the person is during drug detoxification. For example drug detox treatment that uses oral medications will take longer to address the side effects of withdrawal than a treatment that is based on IV therapy medical detox, which is immediate.

Outpatient Drug Detox vs. Inpatient Drug Detox

Certain types of drug abuse can be treated through an outpatient medical detox program. The most common drug abuse addressed in an outpatient detox capacity is opiate abuse such as prescription painkillers and heroin.

An outpatient drug detox is a long-term program. The medications often used are slow-acting and it is not unheard of that individuals who began taking the medications used for outpatient detox have never stopped and many continue taking them for as long as 20 years. Studies show that many people become addicted to Methadone or Suboxone because they never stopped taking it.

The length of drug detox in an inpatient facility typically lasts from a week and up to two weeks, depending on the type of drug being detoxed from. For example a drug detox for Benzodiazepine abuse or addiction may be longer than detox from Opiates. The drug detox facility you choose will be able to tell you how long you can expect to stay in drug detox.

After Drug Detox

After drug detox some individuals experience psychological withdrawal symptoms after the physical withdrawal symptoms have stopped. Most drug detox facilities encourage their patients to follow-up detox with drug rehab.
