Despite a dip in exports in 2014, Brazil is still one of the leaders in the global trade of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates. In 2014, Brazil exported 83 thousand tonnes of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates totaling 609 million USD, 10% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S., where it supplied 0.9% of its total coffee extracts, accounting for 0.5% of the U.S.’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Brazil was a net exporter of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was more pronounced, though in recent years this gap has been closing.
Germany and Malaysia were among the other main global suppliers of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in 2014. Malaysia +21% per year) was also the fastest growing exporter from 2007 to 2014. Malaysia, by virtue of this sustained growth, was able to strengthen its position in the global export structure.
Brazil’s top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the U.S., Argentina, Japan, Italy and Uruguay, with a combined 76% share of Brazil’s exports of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates. The share of Japan increased (+4 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. dropped dramatically (-22% percentage points).
