It’s just so heartbreaking to see how many homeless people populate our city. In some places in LA, you can go shopping on one street where a single cup of coffee can cost up to five dollars, but if you walk one block over, you’ll find yourself on a street covered in trash and tents where so many homeless people live. It’s so crazy to me how easily we accept this as our reality without ever blinking an eye.

Caroline Barry says that being selfless and helping others is the secret to happiness.

Caroline Barry, star of the upcoming biopic 10 Days In A Madhouse, has always believed in giving back to the community. For three years during college, Barry devoted many hours to the Colorado Shakespeare Festival Touring Show, which also had an anti-bullying program. She performed in renditions of The Tempest and Twelfth Night for thousands of children and teenagers across the state. After each show, there were workshops that utilized the play to teach audiences about the complexities of bullying, and how to deal with it in their own lives. Through this program, Barry also discovered her love for working with kids. “Children are so imaginative, and the best part is that they’re malleable. Having a positive role model during the early years can really change a person’s life,” says Barry.

Barry signed up to volunteer for a great cause: helping the homeless. “It’s just so heartbreaking to see how many homeless people populate our city. In some places in LA, you can go shopping on one street where a single cup of coffee can cost up to five dollars, but if you walk one block over, you’ll find yourself on a street covered in trash and tents where so many homeless people live. It’s so crazy to me how easily we accept this as our reality without ever blinking an eye.”

Barry had a great time on Sunday volunteering for Food on Foot, a wonderful organization that has been in motion since 1996. They are one of the most successful companies to help homeless people turn their lives around without the help of government or outside funding. Food on Foot provides homeless individuals with all the necessary tools and support to find a job and rent an apartment. The organization helps people with building resumes, succeeding at interviews, purchasing bus passes, finding apartments, shopping for furniture, and more. 87% of all individuals who they place at a job are still at the same job one year later. “Food on Foot’s success rate is unusually high and it’s a wonderful thing. I’m so glad I came out to support,” says Barry. “My job was simply to hand out bananas. Being able to look people in the eye as they thanked me for my contribution was really an inspiring experience. It’s so nice to know that I made a difference in someone’s day.”

Barry is breaking into Hollywood with her first starring role as Nellie Bly in the upcoming biopic 10 Days In A Madhouse. The movie depicts the true story of trailblazer journalist Nellie Bly as she fakes insanity in order to get committed into a women’s insane asylum, where she reports from within. Nellie Bly was an extraordinary woman whose accomplishments saved thousands of lives. When she died, it was found that all the money she made from her extremely successful journalist career had been given away to orphans, her charity of choice.

“Everything Nellie Bly did was selfless, and that’s why I find her to be so amazing,” says Barry. “I have found that helping others is the only thing in life that can bring you true satisfaction and happiness.”

10 Days In A Madhouse comes to US theaters on November 20th and co-stars Christopher Lambert (Highlander, Mortal Kombat), Kelly Le Brock (Weird Science, The Woman In Red), Julia Chantrey (Mean Girls, Mama) and Russian actress Alexandra Callas. The film was originally set to be released in September but has been pushed back in order to position for the Academy Awards. Caroline Barry’s powerful performance as Nellie Bly is expected to be nominated for Best Actress.
