Some of the stories are quite out of the ordinary for the contemporary reader. For example, his granddaddy taught Bucky, the pug, to smoke a filter cigarette, something they’d probably be arrested for today. Another tale was when at ten years of age, James got a rifle for Christmas. It was too cold to shoot it during the winter so he would sit in a chair in the kitchen and shoot at an arrangement of bottles and cans sitting on a table in the back yard. He would raise the rifle; kick the door open with his left foot, aim and fire. He was careful not to shoot a hole in the screen door. There wasn’t much time to aim. The possibility of shooting an unsuspecting family member was always foremost on his mind. These stories are sure to entertain all comers, and perhaps even inspire his readers to write about their life experiences.
“I was always a storyteller, but I never imagined I’d be a writer. I was grateful for my daughter’s comment as it inspired me to share stories about my life. It was fun remembering and recounting these events that shaped my life. I hope readers enjoy what it was like ‘back in the day’.”
When he first decided to write, Parker noticed an ad in the local paper for a writing retreat sponsored by writing guru, Tom Bird who has developed The Tom Bird Method which has helped hundreds of writers put pen to paper and deliver a first draft of both non-fiction and fiction books alike in short order. From there, he went through the publishing process to see his work finally in print.
One reader named Janice says, “I enjoyed this book very much. I almost felt like I was back in Texas in the 40s and 50s. It doesn’t go many miles from there, but it covers most of a lifetime. The author’s stories of growing up in a poor, rural setting are often funny, and always ring true. I smiled all the way through, except when I was laughing out loud. His accounts of his medical emergencies, told simply, with as much humor as he could muster, show how important courage and perseverance are in this life. His lessons for his daughters are really lessons for us all, told in an entertaining way.”
