By providing service to others who have suffered a similar addiction to drugs or alcohol, the recovering addict is given the opportunity to experience the joy of leading another to a healthy, balanced life; one that is free from the emotional and physical bondage of substance abuse.
Many drug and alcohol dependency programs have recognized the benefits of incorporating the tenets of the Alcoholic Anonymous 12-Step program into their treatment modality.

This 12-step program for sobriety was initially developed in 1935, beginning with two men – both who had been hopeless alcoholics.  However, through the healing steps they developed, they were able to achieve life-long sobriety and lead others to the same condition.  From those humble beginnings this approach to sobriety has evolved into an international program with over two million members, worldwide.

By incorporating the tenets of the 12-step recovery program into a treatment plan that integrates individual counseling, family counseling, recreation, EAGALA (equine therapy) and an extensive wilderness adventure, a recovering addict’s goal of sobriety has all of the components for success.  Not only do the 12 steps help contribute to the recovering drug or alcohol addict’s sobriety success; but this provides a vehicle for on-going community support once they leave their inpatient treatment facility.

This 12-step program assists the patient in recognizing his addiction issues and beginning to deal in a healthy way with those emotional and psychological triggers that have led to his escape into abusing drugs or alcohol.  The combination of individual therapy with a trained and certified counselor, allows the patient to begin to understand the underlying dialogues that have contributed to his inability to say no to a chemical dependency that has led to devastating results, both personally and for those around him.

Another component of the 12-step program is to help the recovering addict recognize the impact that a dependency on drugs or alcohol has had on family members, friends, co-workers and others in their life, while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  By truly recognizing their destructive behaviors and the harm they have caused, the patient is able to seek resolution of any ill feelings that those harmed may harbor for past transgressions.  This allows the patient the opportunity to free himself of the shame, pain or guilt that may be attached to said transgressions, and to then approach those around him with a healthier perspective.

One of the most dynamic aspects of the 12-step approach to maintaining sobriety is a commitment to service.  By providing service to others who have suffered a similar addiction to drugs or alcohol, the recovering addict is given the opportunity to experience the joy of leading another to a healthy, balanced life; one that is free from the emotional and physical bondage of substance abuse.  By sharing and serving with like-minded individuals, there is always a ready support in moments of need, providing a viable alternative to medication with drugs or alcohol.
