The holiday season is in full swing which means ample time spent with friends and family celebrating, feasting, and socializing.Joining in the fun can be a great way to prevent boredom and isolation, but for those in recovery from addiction, it can also mean increased stress and temptation. Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press offering helpful tips to help make the most of the holiday season without surrendering sobriety.
“Just because you are in recovery doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the holiday season and share in the fun,” says Susie Shea, co-owner of the drug and alcohol rehab center near Los Angeles. “Be more strategic this year about who you choose to spend your time with. You don’t have to accept every invite. Instead of heading to party where you know everyone will be drinking, opt instead for a more laidback night with family.”
Heading to a support group meeting before or after a party can help strengthen resolve and motivation to stay sober, notes Shea. Everyone is dealing with similar struggles and challenges and can offer support and encouragement. Those in recovery are reminded that they are far from alone and plenty of others are choosing to stay sober as well, friends and family alike.
“Have a plan before you go to the gathering,” says Shea. “Bring your own non-alcoholic drink and a few ideas for small talk if you know you get nervous. Instead of hanging out near the drinks, situate yourself on the other side of the room and get involved in games or dancing. Don’t let others pressure you into the temptation to drink, and when you’re ready to leave – go.”
David Cohen, a licensed clinical social worker and certified alcohol and drug counselor who is in long-term recovery, shared with RedEye, “The holiday season is about having fun, but more important it is about love, intimacy, spirituality, sharing, caring and belonging. You can do that without using. You can do that with sobriety. Keep to the value of the holiday. The best gift a person can offer their family is the gift of sobriety.”
“The holidays can make people more aware of drinking issues,” says Shea. “They realize that they use alcohol as a way of trying to fit in, feel more relaxed, or ease stress. If you can’t get through the day without a drink in hand, or are dreading an alcohol-free event, it may be time to seek help. The same goes for when you notice this about someone you love.”
Shea adds that the holidays can be a good time to enter treatment because it takes people out of stressful and tempting situations and allows them to focus on their recovery. While they may miss out this year, they’re setting themselves up for more enjoyable years in the future where they’re able to make memories and celebrate traditions with a clearer mind and healthier body. Sobriety is a gift that can last a lifetime and give people a new perspective. Chapters Capistrano provides clients with customized treatment so they can start a new chapter in their life.
