The desire to begin using again may stem from a variety of problems, for example, having too much free time. or not being able to manage the pressures of one’s life, or an overconfidence in thinking that we have full self-control, may all result in relapse.
For optimal healing to occur, clients struggling with addictions must develop a strong personality that will build self-control. This may include:
1. Preparation to face problems before they arise
Our ability to predict Life’s challenges allows us to better prepare for them which is crucial to remaining abstinent.
2. Adopting a culture of openness with others
Keeping secrets, especially in treatment, is like ‘a part of town the cops never go to.’ That part of town keeps getting worse and worse, and becomes a magnet for additional behaviors that we are likely to want to keep secret. By adopting a culture of openness with like-minded individuals, we begin to realize that we are not alone and the secrets which formerly created a disconnection, when brought into the light, creates a connection which ultimately heals us.
3. Living a balanced personal life
This is when one strives to grow in all aspects of life without letting one aspect overshadow or undermine another aspect of our lives. Learning to balance our career goals with our personal goals, our spiritual goals with our need to have fun, and find peace of mind in times of stress, are all crucial to maintaining a balanced life.
4. Avoiding accumulation of issues
This is attained by living day by day in a way that allows us to solve the problems when they arise, rather than allowing them to accumulate and becoming unmanageable.
5. Avoiding or controlling pressures of life
Parts of living a balanced life, is knowing when to rest and went play. For most of those of us who struggle with addictions, knowing how to relax and have fun without the use of substances will be crucial to our recovery.
6. Controlling one’s desire
Resisting tempting situations by analyzing both the pros and cons of using substances can you help us to develop decision making skills, enhance our capacity for delayed gratification, rather than immediate gratification, and help is to function mindfully rather than mindlessly at the whim of our every impulse.
These simple tips can help those struggling with addictions to maintain control after recovery by strengthening the inner self.
