There’s a Glimmer of Hope in West Virginia’s Drug Problems

Helping you to bring what’s important, back into focus.
Last year, West Virginia posted a dismal 31.3 drug overdose-associated deaths for every 100,000 deaths.

This was up from 28.1 per 100,000 in 2011. Despite the depressing figures, West Virginia’s drug rehabilitation health officials and workers are very optimistic that this trend will soon be reversed.

Whether the assumption holds ground or not entirely depends on three things – the preparedness of the state’s rehabilitation services, the willingness and openness of West Virginia’s substance abusers to seek professional treatment, and the changes in the whole West Virginia society necessary to provide a more accepting and supportive attitude towards individuals who may have problems with drugs but are afraid to come out in the open.

Health care practitioners in West Virginia’s drug rehab facilities are one in saying that the services that they provide have been largely under-utilized. In a national study, roughly 15 out of 100 substance abusers and dependents actively seek professional rehabilitation assistance while a good 28 out of 100 eventually end up in the emergency room of a hospital facility because of drug overdose. Unfortunately, the greater majority of drug users do not use these community resources that are made available to them.

Health experts in West Virginia believe that it has something to do with the legal implications of admitting oneself in an addiction center. Showing up in a substance treatment or rehab center has been regarded as an open admission of one’s guilt. However, health workers reiterate that this is not the case.

Many of the rehab centers’ rehabilitees have all been successfully reintegrated into their respective communities without much legal fuss. This is because drug dependents are seen as victims of circumstance whereby majority succumb to inherent human weakness. As such, West Virginia’s rehab facilities are trying to spread the word about the many benefits of seeking professional help.

Addiction treatment protocols are always performed in accordance to a specific set of guidelines. This is to ensure that all individuals who receive the treatment protocol will be able to achieve optimum benefits and minimize the harmful effects of the withdrawal period. All patients are carefully monitored of their progress including their reactions and sensitivities to the different components of the therapy. This is to ensure that the patient is safe and comfortable in every aspect of the therapeutic regimen.

One essential element to the puzzle is the openness to drug treatment and the willingness to undergo rehabilitation by the concerned individuals. This must come from the heart without coercion from anybody else. In order for the whole program to succeed it is imperative that substance abusers seek help themselves. And this is where the challenge lies. West Virginia’s rehab centers can only hope that with proper information dissemination, they can motivate a greater number of would-be rehabilitees this time around.

The last piece to the puzzle is the support of the community, particularly the family. A supportive, not punitive and condescending, community is required to encourage many of West Virginia’s substance abusers to seek professional help. Rehab centers can also help communities and families gain a better understanding of the state-wide effort to help the victims of illicit drugs and addicting substances.

If these three pieces to the puzzle are established and ascertained by rehab centers, the glimmer of hope might as well become a beacon of change for the entire state of West Virginia.
