Keeping seeds in a cool, dry place inside a properly labeled, airtight container is the best storage practice, according to a seed expert from Home and Garden America.

Carson City, NV – October 11, 2017 – Non gmo heirloom seeds are all the rage these days in the organic gardening community. Favored for their ability to produce the most natural and best-tasting crops, these seeds are now a must-have for seed saving. In fact, lots of home gardeners are now storing non gmo heirloom seeds for their seed collection.

Seed storing is a wonderful practice, but unfortunately, not all gardeners know the best way to effectively preserve their valuable non gmo heirloom seeds. An expert from Home and Garden America addressed this concern in a recent interview. “Storing seeds is quite easy as long as you follow the basics. With the right tips, your seeds can last for years or even decades down the road,” said the expert.

He began with the first storage tip, which is putting the seeds in an airtight container. Air and seeds should never interact with each other, that’s why using an airtight container such as a Mason jar is strongly recommended. The tighter the seal, the better it is for the longevity of the seeds.

“If you save your own seeds, see to it that they’re completely dry before putting them in the jar. If you shop for seeds, you’ll find that some seed packs already come in an airtight bag or vault. If you bought the seeds for survival use and never plan to open the bag except for an emergency, then the seeds can be stored in its original packaging. Just be sure to ask the seller if their packaging is indeed airtight and suitable for storage,” the HAGA seed expert advised.

The second storage tip is keeping the non gmo heirloom seeds in a cool and dry environment. Heat, light and moisture should not be able to access the seeds. For short-term storage, a cool place that’s under 70°F is the ideal spot. A basement or cellar is good for this purpose. Stored this way, the seeds will last for 5 or more years.

For longer storage, refrigeration is a good option. Keep the seeds in the fridge and they will last for at least 10-15 years. For very long-term storage, freezing is best. The non gmo heirloom seeds can easily go for decades if frozen, making it ideal for survival preparedness.

The third storage tip is labeling the seed containers. The date and specific variety must always be listed down so it’s easier to organize the seeds and determine which batch they came from. This is very helpful especially if one has a huge heirloom seed collection.

To summarize, storing the seeds in a cool, dry place inside an airtight container with the right label is the best way to preserve non gmo heirloom seeds.

“Whether they are for gardening or survival use, your seeds can last for a long time if you follow these simple storage tips. Remember to get the highest quality seeds you can find so they will last even longer,” the expert further advised.
