It’s no secret that holistic treatment has taken off in the past decade.

Seeing a surge of providers seeking to treat the whole body rather than just the symptoms, and not surprisingly patients are reaping the benefits. What is not widely known by patients is that many of the holistic services that provide a plethora of health benefits can be covered by their insurance policy if a doctor believes you may benefit.

1. Nutritional Coaching

A nutrition Coach is a wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. Nutrition Coaches educate and support clients to achieve their nutrition goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments. Nutrition Coaches have a variety of services they provide for patients and clients of all types. A coach will begin by teaching the basics of general nutrition and then take a specific approach to each patient based on careful analysis of that person’s needs, their body type and any other information necessary to help that person reach their goals while keeping them safe and healthy.

2. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicinal intervention dating back thousands of years. It works by inserting thin needles superficially into the skin to stimulate small wells of energy. Through clinical trials, acupuncture has been proven effective in treating various medical conditions and its use has expanded into Western and more conventional medical practices. According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture is an effective treatment for many health conditions.

3. Yoga

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline that denotes a variety of schools, practices and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, the best-known being Hatha yoga and Raja yoga. The origins of yoga have been speculated to date back to the fifth and sixth centuries B.C.E. Yoga was brought to the west by gurus from India in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Yoga may benefit each person in different ways, but the medical community has documented evidence that yoga can help many conditions, including but not limited to: heart disease, chronic pain, and even depression.

4. Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. There are dozens of types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities). People seek massage therapy for a variety of reasons – to reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles, rehabilitate injuries, reduce pain, and promote overall health and wellness. Generally, massage is known to affect the circulation of blood and the flow of blood and lymph, reduce muscular tension or flaccidity, affect the nervous system through stimulation or sedation, and enhance tissue healing.

5. Personal Training

A personal trainer is a fitness professional involved in exercise prescription and instruction. They motivate their clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability as they work to improve their health. Trainers also measure client’s strengths and weaknesses with fitness assessments. These fitness assessments may be performed before and after an exercise program to measure their client’s improvements in physical fitness. Personal Trainers may also educate their clients in many other aspects of wellness beyond exercise, including general health and nutrition.
