France dominates in the global vanilla trade. In 2014, France exported 0.8 thousand tonnes of vanilla totaling 32 million USD, 9% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany, where it supplied 25% of its total vanilla exports in value terms, accounting for 18% of Germany’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, France was a net importer of vanilla. Over this period, imports consistently exceeded exports in value terms. In physical terms, the difference was the same.
Germany and Canada were among the other main global suppliers of vanilla in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Mauritius (+89% per year) and the Netherlands (+57% per year). Canada significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, France’s top 5 trading partners were Germany, the U.S., Italy, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, with a combined 64% share of France’s vanilla exports. The share of Germany increased (+4 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated negative dynamics (-7 percentage points).
