Phoenix, AZ – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu players in Phoenix can learn how to take their game to the next level with Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestling, also called Catch Wrestling. Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestling originated hundreds of years ago in Lancashire, England. It was the original no holds barred fighting style that became a top sport in the United States in the early 1900s.
Catch Wrestling focuses on speed and leveraging physics to control the opponent and end matches with quick submissions. In 1914, Ad Santel, who was the World Light Heavyweight Champion in Catch Wrestling, beat World Judo Champion Tokugoro Ito, 4th degree Judo black belt Daisuke Sakai, 5th degree Judo black belt Reijiro Nagata, and 5th degree Judo black belt Hikoo Shoji. Since then, many Catch Wresting moves have been integrated into Mixed Martial Arts, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
“Many people do not know that Masahiko Kimura beat Helio Gracie, a founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a Catch Wrestling double wrist lock,”, said Gilbert Olivas, Lead Instructor at the Phoenix Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club. “Gracie thought so highly of the technique that he incorporated it as a foundational Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission, naming it the ‘Kimura’,” he added.
