HAMDEN, CONN. – 09 Sep, 2015 – Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University will celebrate the launch of the second series of Famine Folios, a collection of essays that covers various aspects of the Irish Famine, with a program and reception that will start at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the museum, 3011 Whitney Ave.
The following four folios will be released:
• L. Perry Curtis Jr.,Notice to Quit: The Great Irish Famine Evictions.”
• Michael Foley,Death in Every Paragraph: Journalism & the Great Irish Famine.”
• Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh,I mBéal an Bháis”: The Great Famine and the Language Shift in 19th-Century Ireland.”
• Robert SmartBlack Roads: The Famine in Irish Literature.”
Curtis, Foley and Smart will discuss their essays, which will be available for purchase. Series editors Grace Brady, executive director of the museum, and Niamh O’Sullivan, curator, also will speak briefly about the Famine Folios series. A reception will follow the program.
“The Famine Folios are a unique resource for students, scholars and researchers, as well as general readers, covering many aspects of the Famine in Ireland from 1845–1852, the worst demographic catastrophe of 19th-century Europe,” said Brady.
“The essays are interdisciplinary in nature and make available new research in famine studies by internationally established scholars in history, art history, cultural theory, philosophy, media history, political economy, literature and music,” Brady said. “This publications initiative augments the museum experience, and is part of the museum’s commitment to making its collection accessible to audiences of all ages and levels of educational interest.

Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac preserves, builds and presents its art collection in order to stimulate reflection, inspire imagination and advance awareness of Ireland’s Great Hunger and its long aftermath on both sides of the Atlantic.
Works by noted contemporary Irish artists are featured at the museum including internationally known sculptors John Behan, Rowan Gillespie and Éamonn O’Doherty; as well as contemporary visual artists, Robert Ballagh, Alanna O’Kelly, Brian Maguire and Hughie O’Donoghue. Featured paintings include several important 19th and 20th]century works by artists such as James Brenan, Daniel Macdonald, James Arthur O’Connor and Jack B. Yeats.
The museum, which is free to the public, is open Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays 1-5 p.m.

The university also is home to Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac, a scholarly resource for the study of the Great Hunger, which is also known as An Gorta Mór.
