Kuester Management Group Strategizes on Ways to get Homeowners More Involved with the HOA

Active involvement from homeowners is essential for helping the HOA better manage the community, and Kuester Management Group shares insight on how to get homeowners engaged.

The homeowners association is intended to not only protect property value and the integrity of the neighborhood, but also make it a more enjoyable place for members to live. While sometimes it can seem as though there are too many rules to abide by or hoops to jump through, homeowners should consider why these protections are in place – and recognize that it is for their benefit. In a new statement to the press, Kuester Management Group offers ways that the HOA can support getting homeowners more involved.

“Becoming an active member of the HOA can allow homeowners to be more involved in decision making and sharing their ideas for the management of the community,” says Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. “It is very easy to complain about the rules, but how often do people take that next step and actually do something to try to change them? By working with the board, homeowners can make a positive difference and have their voice heard.”

The first thing the HOA should do is ensure that all members have copies of official documents that govern the organization and understand what they mean. If homeowners have a question or concern, they should know who to speak to and how to get in touch. Being visible as a board member and getting to know homeowners can make them feel more comfortable and respected, says Kuester. They are able to associate faces and names when they need something.

Appealing to the interests of homeowners is another way to enhance involvement, explains Kuester. “Promote various committees and how members can use their talents to make a difference. Whether they’re great at event planning, marketing, business, finance, or entertaining, their skills can be a valuable asset. Show them ways they can put their abilities to use and make the community a better place.”

Another tip Kuester offers is to show appreciation. When homeowners are involved and working hard, take a few moments to acknowledge their efforts. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, but knowing that their hard work has not gone overlooked can make it more rewarding. Consider hosting an appreciation get together each year to celebrate and encourage others to get involved.

“Finally, let them know that their opinions do matter, and their concerns are being heard,” says Kuester. “When homeowners see changes being made and recognize the impact that it has, it can make them feel more empowered. It can be very rewarding to know that they are making a positive difference just by speaking up or joining a committee and doing something they already enjoy.” For more support in running an HOA, Kuester encourages communities to consider the benefits of partnering with a property management company.
