The individual who is struggling with addiction is typically not a part of the intervention planning that is done with an experienced intervention counselor. This process is oftentimes uncomfortable and unexpected on the addicts behalf. Interventions can be stressful and may cause intense feelings of anger and resentment. It is important to keep in mind that it has come this far, and an intervention may be the best solution to ensure that the addict gets the help they need.
What to Expect
Step one is to seek professional guidance before attempting an intervention alone. An interventionist will have had plenty experience and express to the family or friends what can be expected.
Steps the Family can Take
Intervention should be taken one step at a time. Planning should be taken seriously by the family members and loved ones involved. During this portion of the intervention loved ones meet with an intervention specialist to understand the right way to approach the situation and the right words to say to convey love and genuine concern to the addict. Something to keep in mind is what will be done if the addict chooses to refuse help. A few consequences should be set in place such as; be ready to discontinue any financial help that may have previously been in place, and put an end to the enabling behavior.
The Intervention
This is the challenging part. During an intervention, the addict is confronted by loved ones with a genuine concern about their well being. The family and friends surrounding the addict will point out specific facts that indicate a problem is present. An ultimatum will be presented to the addict. They choose treatment, or a life without the help and support of family and friends.
This can be a difficult process for both the addict and the loved ones but with the right intervention specialist the process can be successful. Individuals tend to choose a specialist based on cost, but this isn’t always the most accurate approach. The most expensive interventionist isn’t always the best, and the cheapest isn’t always the worst. Choosing a trusted professional who cares about the addict and getting the help they need is the most important aspect in choosing wisely.
