The Barstow Prophets are all seasoned musicians who understand the first rule of playing live: when the band has fun, the crowd has fun.

October 27, 2015 – Temecula, CA - Baily’s Front Street Bar and Grille typically has great bands on Saturday nights. This weekend was no exception. The local Barstow Prophets blistered the patio stage for three sets delivering their renditions of 70s guitar jam rock, blues and soul. The lineup includes Chris Whelton on vocals and guitar, Mike Miller on vocals and guitar, Ryan Berkowski on harmonica, Miles Denney on drums and on this night Amir Alavi on bass. Conga player Leonard Wallace is still recovering from rotator cuff surgery.

The Barstow Prophets are all seasoned musicians who understand the first rule of playing live: when the band has fun, the crowd has fun. The band opened with a particularly rocking version of Buddy Holly’s Not fade Away, followed by The Allman Brothers One Way Out, a very Chuck Berry rendition of Route 66, BB King’s The Thrill Is Gone and a beautiful version of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On, sung by Miller.

The band finished the night with a respectable cover of Hendrix’s Hey Joe, ending precisely at 10pm. I like the Barstow Prophets because when you see them perform, you can tell that they are “all in”. With Mike Bacarella’s departure to LA, Whelton has become the alpha lead guitarist, comfortably stepping forward to lead his bandmates. The band has retained it’s unique two lead guitar solos, whereby Whelton and Miller play at the same time, feeding off each other’s lines.

In fact, the highlight of the gig was a very Cream version of Crossroads, with Miller, Berkowski and Whelton all going off at separate times. It seems that there are more great bands in the Temecula valley than ever before. Old Town Temecula and the surrounding wineries are the perfect breeding ground for musicians. All it takes is a venue that is committed to live music, like Baily’s, so that people can discover a band like The Barstow Prophets, who are playing their hearts out for fans. Isn’t that what Saturday nights are for?
