Even fledgling companies can find ways to make huge impacts on the local community.
Harper’s Hut Shaved Ice is a two year old shaved ice business located in Oklahoma. In 2 years the company has given back nearly $15,000 to the communities it serves, expanded to 3 locations with 6 leased locations.

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. – Oct. 21, 2015 - When looking for a company that gives back to its community, in Sand Springs, one company is a cut above the rest. Harper’s Hut Shaved Ice, with CEO William Nozak, has taken entrepreneurship to a whole new level. Where some companies are Going Green, Harper’s Hut is Giving Back. William and Lindsay Nozak founded Harper’s Hut Shaved Ice in 2014, shortly after losing their first pregnancy.

William was a full-time Director of Education at a school in Tulsa, American Institute of Medical Technology, where he oversaw the academics, educators, directors, and taught several medical classes. Due to this tragedy in their lives, William & Lindsay decided it was time to put William’s MBA to work, so he left education and started a small business. In that time, William contacted longtime friend Daniel Nix and they decided to start a shaved ice business in Tulsa. They opened their doors in June 2014 and won Best of The Best – Tulsa World that same year, while giving back $3,000 to the community.

“We’re not just shaved ice, we are an event center for families. People bring their kids to hula-hoop, jump rope, or throw frisbee. On the weekends they might play on our Xbox 360 or watch a movie with us,” Nozak says. In 2015, the company expanded to a second and third location (Mannford, & Glenpool) and leased out the brand to six other locations. “We have two goals at Harper’s Hut Shaved Ice; (1) be as profitable as possible, and (2) to give back as much as possible,” Nozak says. In 2015, Harper’s Hut donated gifts, clothing, food, free snow cones, and money in excess of $10,000 to the local community. The company’s goal is to give no less than 10% of sales back to the community. They even have a ticker on their website keeping track of everything given to the community, because it is that important to them.

The company hopes to give back in excess of $20,000 in 2016. It looks like this company is not going away anytime soon and will most likely continue to grow as it reaches toward franchising. You can find social media coupons on their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, play with their games, get double punches on your frequent buyer cards on Tuesday, bring your pets on Wednesday, or watch a movie on the weekends. They’ve even brought back an authentic root beer float and sell shaved ice in large containers (The Ice Chest) for parties.

Their flavor combinations are innovative and original and clearly a huge part of their success. Their crooked roofs, crooked windows, crooked building (as they designed it) is definitely a huge attraction for the locals and a big part of the local appeal, But it seems a larger part of this businesses success comes from their determination to give back.
