The Various Treatment Program Options

A recovery and rehab program that recognizes different people operate, learn and heal differently will present a wide variety of therapeutic methods and modalities.
One of the primary methods of assessing a recovery program for alcoholics and those addicted to drugs is an objective and clear view into the program’s approach to its clients.

Are the people in recovery treated like children and steered from therapeutic activity to therapeutic activity? Is there an over-emphasis on the medical aspects of the treatment program, taking the patient’s wishes as uneducated and unimportant? Do the non-medical professionals at the facility appear to be engaged, friendly and treating the people they support with respect? Is the environment comfortable?

A recovery and rehab program that recognizes different people operate, learn and heal differently will present a wide variety of therapeutic methods and modalities. It will help the recovering addict select the platform that best seems to suit their lifestyle and needs. Some addicts in recovery have a great deal of work to do around family and early history issues. For these situations, the facility should offer options to help heal critical, underlying mental health problems and develop stronger relationships in the family. To whatever extent possible, recognizing this type of fundamental trigger for addiction is critical to helping the addict achieve a recovery that will actually last.

Likewise, there is plenty of evidence that inpatient treatment at a recovery center will provide the most intense, immersive and personally accountable environment for healing; however, when that kind of arrangement produces more stress than healing, the program staff should quickly help the addict transition into an outpatient program. There have been excellent advances in the way outpatient treatment is handled. Recollections of programs that were little more than group therapy sessions, interspersed with arts and crafts, are out of date. Rather, most outpatient programs are now oriented as an executive study program at a world-class university. Addicts report for evening and weekend treatment, allowing them to focus on their own health for extended periods of time, with intermediate check points for accountability and emergency support. The main benefit of an outpatient program is that the patient is able to continue with work, school, and family responsibilities. The excellent outpatient program will be staffed by licensed and fully credentialed mental health professionals. No one should find that the outpatient program at a recovery treatment center is staffed by the “B Team”. There should also be the same level of case management and practical, logistical assistance provided to the patients who reside at home as is provided to those living at the facility. In fact, some of the best facilities have world-class inpatient and outpatient programs to choose from.

For those who need to get away from the stressors of life that may be encouraging the substance abuse, an inpatient program is more beneficial; however, when exiting life is not possible, outpatient programs are a great option to integrate recovery from addiction into one’s life. Either program that is attended should maintain the level of care and treatment that is expected with a world-class drug and alcohol treatment program.
